Stars, HR Diagram, Questions to answer
Date: 11/13/2006
tutoring 4th period 387

RE: Earth Science 2006 pds1,7, and 8
What are Stars?
How do they produce energy?
What things can we determine with HR diagram?
How are apparent diameter and brightness affected by distance?
How does the process of fusion and resulting complexity reflect a chemical or elemental evolution of sorts?
Skills to be demonstrated
Given two variables or things that describe a star like luminosity and temperature and a chart that shows both, you must be able to choose the correct star. Lab skill previously done.
Understand that the luminosity chart is factors of 10 with the sun being the reference point or what other stars are compared to. Ex a star that is 100 times as bright as our sun has a 100 luminosity, and one that is 100 times less is 1/100 of our sun or .01 luminosity.
Further review
How do stars and planets differ?
What color indicates the coolest temperatures? Hottest?
100 watt bulbs are placed at 10 feet, 100, 1000,. Which will appear brightest? Which is?
What is the lifecycle of a star?
What stars have a similar temperature to our sun?
Which group has the greatest variety in temperatures?
What happens to temperature when the star changes from red to blue?
What is the relationship between luminosity and temperature?
